John Kyte’s Garden Rally of 1981

Plaque from John Kyte's 1981 Garden Rally - now at Market Lavington Museum

Back in the 1980s John Kyte lived in a High Street House, on the corner of Chapel Lane. The house itself had a varied past. Older residents remember listening to the juke box there, when it was a café. At previous times it had been a chemist shop and a book lending library.

For a while, some thirty years ago, John invited friends and others to bring engines of various kinds to display in his back garden. There were barn engines which used to do useful work on farms and some steam powered devices. For a few days the village hummed to the rhythm of these engines of various types and savoured the aroma of the fumes from oil engines and coal burning steamers.

These events are remembered with great affection in the village and we, at Market Lavington Museum are delighted to have one of the plaques like those which were given to exhibitors.
