May Potter’s Birthday Cup

May Potter was born on August 11th 1903

Her full name was Helena May Potter and this cup was made to celebrate her birth.

Cup made to celebrate the birth of May Potter - now at Market Lavington Museum

The writing on the cup with a wrong spelling of Helena

May, as she was always known was part of a long established family in Market Lavington. Her grandfather, Edwin Potter had set up and run a horse bus service between Market Lavington and Devizes. This would still have been running in May’s early years. She’d have remembered her grandad’s bus service which, in 2011,  feel likes something from a long ago age.

We have already seen the clock that May received from her students at the day and Sunday schools, given on the occasion of her marriage to Bill Elisha.

Mrs May Elisha taught at Market Lavington School throughout her teaching career. She was still called upon, as a supply teacher when the St Barnabas School opened, on Drove Lane, in 1971.

May died in 1991 and many of her personal possesions came to the museum
