Forward Plan – Update

This is an unusual post!

We are updating our forward plan at Market Lavington Museum. If you have any suggestions for how we continue to develop the museum we’d be delighted to hear from you.

Below is a copy of what we have so far.

Please send any thoughts by 1st February 2015

Review of the Previous Plan

The museum, which was established in 1984, is housed in the old schoolmaster’s house, built in 1846. The building is leased to the Board of Trustees by the Earl of Radnor. The lease was renegotiated in 2005 and extended until 25 March 2022. The Museum is controlled by the Board of Trustees. The museum is fully registered ( 1185), is a registered charity (no 293631), and a company limited by guarantee (1865045).

All Museum staff are volunteers, and receive no remuneration. They consist of an Honorary Curator, Documentation Assistant, both of whom are also Trustees, and Stewards who staff the Museum during opening hours and help with collections care work. The Board of Trustees also includes a Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. Mentoring is provided by Wiltshire County Council Museums Service (CMAS) as is care and practical conservation support

The Museum is open from May to the end of October on Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 2.30-4.30pm. We also open for two days immediately after Christmas which has proved to be very successful and at other times by arrangement with the Honorary Curator.

In addition a blog has been developed which attracts some 200 visits per day and the museum is taken out into the community – church and other fetes and local events. There are also talks given to the local area people and other groups further afield.

Museum artefacts have been loaned to other museums (eg Stonehenge Visitor Centre) to ensure maximum exposure of Market Lavington Museum.

We continue to celebrate the centenary of World War One which brings an influx of visitors.
