At Market Lavington Museum, we have a collection of books. Some are non-fiction and relevant to the neighbourhood and some have been owned by local people, often with their names or presentation inscriptions inside. Amongst our books, we have some that were produced for children.

This rather shabby, hardbound book contains the story of Cinderella and a couple more stories. It dates from 1890 and was donated by our museum founder, Peggy Gye, but we do not know its connection to the village. However, it is a generic item and similar books were, no doubt, read by children here.

Some of the pages of the Cinderella story are missing, but the book still contains many coloured illustrations.

Although the book is over 130 years old, this story would be familiar to modern readers. We will look at the other contents of this book another time. Aspects of some of them would differ from our current expectations of suitability for present day youngsters.
