More from Ethel Gye’s recipe book

In Ethel Gye’s recipes, we noted that her Christmas cake recipe came from ‘The People’. Perchance, we have in Market Lavington Museum An enamel sign advertising this very publication.

However, we will now take another look in Ethel Gye’s handwritten book and see that not every entry is for a food recipe. They are entered in alphabetical order and some pages have cookery alongside instructions for knitting.

On an S page, a recipe for sloe gin is followed by the pattern for a scarf of Shetland wool.

The B pages start with bedroom slippers. They are preceded, out of alphabetical order, by instructions for making imitation ginger and for lemon cheesecakes.

We’ll take another look in this book next time.
