Combing, rolling and scumbling

In our previous blog entry, we looked at a recently donated set of rollers for Woodgraining. The instructions inside the box lid suggest that the set should also include a brush, which fitted onto the roller and supplied it with colour (an opaque ‘scumble’ glaze) to be rolled onto the surface of the wood.

The rollers supplied a woodgrain effect. (Apparently this process is often used on narrowboats.)

This work could also be done with combs and the King family had a set of these, which were kept in a cigarette tin.
