Watching the Canadian troops

We have written about the Canadian Soldiers in Market Lavington in previous blog entries. We know that they and the Canadians’ horses in Market Lavington were here in 1915.

We also have a photo of the troops near the crossroads in Market Lavington. It was taken by the local Burgess family photographers.

The soldiers are lined up outside the shop which later became the post office (sadly no longer). The white building beyond them, at Lamb Corner, was demolished long ago.

A crowd of children have gathered in the road to get in the photograph. The road would have been much quieter then, but there does appear to be a horse cart outside Mr Godfrey’s shop.

The building next to this used to be a Baptist Chapel and hadn’t yet been converted into a grocery shop (one of the many village businesses that no longer exist).

Although this is a 1915 photo, the children’s clothes still look quite Edwardian with the girls wearing pinafores and the boys with wide collars.

Can you add anything to this or do you want to know more?
