We believe this photo was taken to mark the 90th birthday of Tom Jefferies.

Tom is the man seated in front. He certainly doesn’t look as old as 90 – perhaps the result of a fit and active life.

But he was born in Urchfont in 1907 (or Erchfont as his father wrote it on the 1911 census). For a long time this man – carpenter and builder – could have been called Mr Easterton. He died a couple of years after the photo was taken in 1999.

The other people in the photo (from left to right) are Sue Allen, not known, June Jones, Susan Deegan, Tony Doyle, Ray Kelsey and Keith Jensen.

It’s good to report that many of these people are still active in local life. Two of them volunteer as museum stewards.

And we are able to keep a record of the Parish Council for Easterton from 1997 which is 18 years ago as this is written.

Electing the Parish Council

January 20, 2015

Time was when more people were willing to stand for the role of Parish Councillor than there were actual councillors. It would be interesting to know when that last happened. Parish Councillors, like all of us who work for the museum and for many other village organisations are, essentially, all volunteers. They give up their time just because they want to serve their community It can be hard to find enough volunteers although we are well enough off at the museum.

We happen to have a rather careworn poster which must have been pinned up on a Parish notice board after the election in 1946.

There’s a lovely collection of hard working villagers, both amongst those elected and those who just missed out.

The Parish Council in 1994

January 30, 2013

Market Lavington has had a Parish Council for well over a hundred years. In fact, it celebrated its centenery in 1994, the year of this photo. Local people, through the hundred plus years have given up their time for no financial reward and help to ensure that the village is cared for and that things run smoothly. They have one person, who is a paid employee, dealing with paper work and all sorts of other matters. He or she is the clerk and one suspects that the work they do far outstrips what they are paid for.

Back in 1994, Tom Cockings retired after twenty five years as Parish Clerk. A commemorative photo was taken to mark the occasion showing Tom with the elected councillors of the day.

Back row from left to right we have Dr J Reid, Mr R Francis, Mr T Hudson, Mr C Farmer, Mr AWS Snell and Mr D Barron.

In the front row from left to right we see Mrs S Walker, Mrs J Clark, Mrs C Hunt, Tom Cockings, Mr K Bennett, Mrs J Heath and Mr M Stone.

It’s good to report that nearly twenty years on many of these people still live in the village and are still active in village life.

As for the council itself – there has been a total change of personnel, but twelve good men and women, along with a clerk, still serve the village. You could click here to see who they are and what they are responsible for.
