Electricity in the kitchen

Do you use electricity in the kitchen? Even if you cook with gas, you probably have electric lights and sockets for kettles, mixers and other small machines and you may have an electric fridge or washing machine.

Even now, in Market Lavington, there will be many people cooking with electricity as there is no mains gas here. Before 1926, things were different as mains electricity only came to the village in that year. We still have a kitchen range in the museum that was used for cooking in the building, when it was a home.

Whilst looking through some old newspapers, we noticed a couple of advertisements, encouraging people to consider using electricity.

This one, from a 1936 Wiltshire Gazette, is promoting the use of electricity generally for jobs around the home.

This 1939 paper is reminding people of the benefits of cooking by electricity.

Can you add anything to this or do you want to know more?
