Aunty Gert’s cake

The mother in law of museum founder, Peggy Gye, was Lucretia Ethel Gye, formerly Redstone. She was known as Ethel, as her mother was also Lucretia. Amongst our many recipe books at the museum, we have Lucretia E Gye’s recipe book. We have featured some of her handwritten recipes before – including in Ethel Gye’s recipes.

During our break between talks at the Museum Miscellany, we serve savoury and sweet food made from some of the recipe books in the museum. One of the items at a previous Miscellany was Uncle Walter James‘ fruit cake. This year, we will have Aunty Gert’s cake.

Our 2024 Miscellany will be on Friday 19th April in Market Lavington’s Community Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are available for £8 from St Arbucks coffee shop and on the door. This year, as well as the food, we will have talks on dewponds, the High Street, Edwardian romantic postcards, Easterton, an Imber family and public houses as well as some songs in Wiltshire dialect. We look forward to seeing some of our blog readers there.

And here is Aunty Gert’s cake.
